How long does it take to speak fluent english as natives?
Hi there.I work as an english assistant in a small company. But I seldom speak english, eveyday what I need to do is to translate some documents into Chinese. It is very boring, because I have no chance to communicate with foreigners.I am thinking about quiting the job.Forget about those bullshit above, let us get down to business. How long does it take to speak english as fluent as natives?I have passed cet-6,which,I think,is also crap though.I really hope I can speak fluent english ASAP.To be frank,I do have my plans to learn english, but I don't know if I am doing the right thing. Here we go.These are my english-learning plans as follows:
First of all, listening is very essential,so I listen to VOA everyday.Generally speaking,I sixty percent understand what they say.
Secondly,it comes to oral,I have no person to speak to ,so I talk to myself.I just say something about what I am doing.Sometimes,I try to describe things arround me.
In addition,I read Yahoo News online everyday.Sometimes,I read some english-version novel.
Moreover,I like keeping diary. So I write diary in english nearly everyday. But someone suggest me recite the New Concept Two and Three before I carry on.And I am trying to recite the New Concet Two at the moment. But this time someone suggest me retell it rather than recite it.
There is one more thing I have to mention, translation.I download some translating exercise and pratice every day.
It is last but not the least, singing english songs is one of my hobbies. And now I am trying to sing rap.
My question is,with the method I mention above,is there a possibility that I can speak as fluent as the native speakers in two years if I practice everyday?
Thank you very much in advance.

What kind of company is it that you work at? Do other employees speak English as well?

The most comfortable (or should I say uncomfortable?) way to truly practice your English is to start talking with someone. Talking with someone gives you a lot less time to react, and thus you are more likely to make mistakes (and this is where you will gain experience in fixing the mistakes as you do the talking more often). All the practices that you do with yourself in private is hopefully to be able to use publically you know :) You can try to look up English learning websites where there are other members such as an English speaker studying Mandarin so you guys can help each other out.

Since I live in USA, I don't know what the CET-6 mean nor do I know what is New Concept Two and Three… so I apologize that I really don't know how much English is that. But from what I have read so far from your writing, I praise your English. It is a lot better than what I have seen before. I praise that you have written this question in full English as well.

Now onto your methods:

VOA - I personally have no experience as I used to listen to English radio channels to start embrace myself in English when I am outside of school. But VOA seems like a good way to practice listening.

Talking to yourself - this is excellent! In addition you can also look up English learning websites. I remember there is this one website I tried before where you could record your voice and other people will help you fix your pronunciation accuracy. Some natives even do the same recording to help you! Sorry I can't recall the website's name at the moment.

Reading news and keeping diary are definitely great! When I was in junior high, our English teacher required us to keep a diary that the teacher checks on every day. Since we were English as Second Language students, daily writing really helped!

I don't know about recitation because recitation is memorization. It might help you sometimes, but your goal is to be able to construct your own sentences and ideas fully after getting familiar with the structures and such. I am assuming New Concept Two and Three is a book that has sentences and such?

Translation is a good idea too :) Though I don't quiet see a connection in helping you speak English as fluently as the native. Translation might help with your job. But think of this way, do native speakers "translate" English into another language? With your English level, it seems to me that you can learn English without interference from your first language. What I mean by that is during my first several years of learning English, I noted down the words in Chinese and had to think of the sentence in Chinese first before I was able to translate it in English. Once you get a hang of English, you should step into the stage where you will be able to talk in English without thinking of it in Chinese first.

Singing English songs is a great idea too! I always wished I could do that. But singing is not my thing. I love songs. So they are mainly for listening purpose as I can't sing.

Writing is still different from speaking, since I don't know how you sound like when speaking English, I can't give you a definite answer. Trust me. Your writing is A LOT better than most native people that I have met :) But I will say that if you practice every day, you will do really well!

Good luck and keep up the excellent work! :)
Lastly forgot to answer directly to your question. It took me approximately 5 years. Took my best friend approximately 3 years (she still has accent, but she is able to communicate fluently). Though the difference is that we both live in USA.
再问: Thank you very much for your long post and your valuable suggestion. The company I work in specializes in financial service. Some of my colleagues speak english, but they just talk to their clients. We talk to each other only in Chinese. Sometimes, I can speak english without thinking in Chinese firstly. But sometimes, I can't do it. So I am trying to speak english as much as possible.
再答: Sorry for the long answer :) I really like this kind of topic and it makes me really happy to see people working really hard in learning a language. I have met so many people that just wish they could have better English but they don't even try to work for it. So I really admire and praise your effort. Don't push yourself too hard. You are doing an amazing job :) Best luck to you!
