1.Ayn Rand的Atlas Shrugged(这本估计国内看不到,因为比较反动):
"Her leg,sculptured by the tight sheen of the stocking,its long line running straight,over an arched instep,to the tip of a foot in a high-heeled pump,had a feminine elegance that seemed out of place in the dusty train car and oddly incongruous with the rest of her."
2.Herman Melville的Moby Dick:
"Sullenly taking the offered lantern,old Fleece limped across the deck to the bulwarks; and then,with one hand dropping his light low over the sea,so as to get a good view of his congregation,with the other hand he solemnly flourished his tongs,and leaning far over the side in a mumbling voice began addressing the sharks,while Stubb,softly crawling behind,overheard all that was said."
Pride and Prejudice:
"He was anxious to avoid the notice of his cousins,from a conviction that if they saw him depart they could not fail to conjecture his design,and he was not willing to have the attempt known till its success could be known likewise; for though feeling almost secure,and with reason,for Charlotte had been tolerably encouraging,he was comparatively diffident since the adventure of Wednesday."
Great Expectations:
"To five little stone lozenges,each about a foot and a half long,which were arranged in a neat row beside their grave,and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine—who gave up trying to get a living,exceedingly early in that universal struggle—I am indebted for a belief I religiously entertained that they had all been born on their backs with their hands in their trousers-pockets,and had never taken them out in this state of existence."
4.William Faulkner的The Sound and the Fury极难懂,不仅有整段整段没有标点的长句,而且还夹进无逻辑意义或语法结构的句子片段,又有大量方言:
"one minute she was standing there the next he was yelling and pulling at her dress they went into the hall and up the stairs yelling and shoving at her up the stairs to the bathroom door and stopped her back against the door and her arm across her face yelling and trying to shove her into the bathroom when she came in to supper"
"Bygmester Finnegan,of the Stuttering Hand,freemen's maurer,lived in the broadest way immarginable in his rushlit toofarback for messuages before joshuan judges had given us numbers or Helviticus committed deuteronomy (one yeastyday he sternely struxk his tete in a tub for to watsch the future of his fates but ere he swiftly stook it out again,by the might of moses,the very water was eviparated and all the guenneses had met their exodus so that ought to show you what a pentschanjeuchy chap he was!) and during mighty odd years this man of hod,cement and edifices in Toper's Thorp piled buildung supra buildung pon the banks for the livers by the Soangso."
