A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began at the tail. Now it is the western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly or the foot of the horse,if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people's rules. They make their own rules.Everyone of them does his work in a way peculiar to himself, and the peculiarity means only that he finds it easier to work in that way.
Now the very same thing is true to literature. And the question"How shall Ibegin?"only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is,you are not yet experienced enough to trust your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail-that is to say,you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning.
Mrs.Jackson is an American doctor. She is now in China. She works in a children's hospital in Chongqing. She is also learning Chinese medicine there. She likes Chinese medicine very much. She loves to work for children. She works hard in the day and reads English books on Chinese medicine at night. She learns Chinese from the Chinese doctors and her Chinere friends. Now she can speak some Chinese. She can read some Chines, too.
Her husband,Mr.Jackson,is an American, too. He teaches English in a middle school in Chongqing. He works hard, too. He works from Monday to Friday. He teaches three classes every day.Sometimes,onSaturdays and Sundays,he teaches other English classes. He wants to make more money.
