In the stories “The story of an hour”and “Lamb to The Slaughter”.They both through on theme that is women livedunder marriage pressure.In the two stories,women took different action toface the marriage pressure.In “The story of an hour”,Mrs.Mallard started todream about the new spring life,but she did not take the initiative,just her imagination.By contrast,in the story “Lamb to The Slaughter”,Mrs.Maloney showed herinitiative.She got her freedom by killing her husband in the end.In the story“Thestory of an hour”,the author showed us a weak women (Mrs.Mallard) .She didn’tdo anything to become a free women,she just wallowed in image (the upstairs).Likethe story said “She could see…..spring life” (paragraph 5) and “She breathed……thelife might be long.”(P 16) Mrs.Mallard dreamed about her freedom through thatwindow,but it did not change anything,she did not change her life by heractual behavior.The marriage oppressed her for a long time.She stood at apassive position and avoid of the reality but the reality pulled her off theimage at the end.According to the story“Lamb to The Slaughter”,Mrs.Maloney was also lived under the marriagepressure.But she had the totally different ending with Mrs.Mallard by her behavior.The writer use the lamb to symbolize her,she used to be weak and lovely wifeunder her husband power.She did everything for thehusband.She got his slippers; makes dinner and slaves over him.But the onlything her husband wants now is a quite divorce.So she fought back to herhusband like “At that point……of his head.(P27) The“weak”wife killed her husband,she stood at a activeposition.Mrs.Maloney killed her husband to against the pressure,she killedher statue as a weak lamb as well,a free women left.In conclusion,bothstories showed that women were oppressed by marriage,but it was reallyimportant on what kind of position you in.Be initiative or passivity,theending will be totally different.

As the story said, “She could see…..spring life” (paragraph 5) and “She breathed……the life might be long.”(Page/paragraph? 16) Mrs. Mallard dreamed about her freedom through "that window upstairs" and seemed to be satisfied with the freedom only in her dream. She did not do anything to change her life. She lived in an oppressive marriage for a long time. She tool a passive position and tried to avoid the reality. But the reality dragged her down and smashed her dream to ashes at the end. According to the story “Lamb to The Slaughter”, Mrs. Maloney also lived under the marriage pressure. But by taking actions, she had a totally different ending than Mrs. Mallard. The writer used the lamb to symbolize Mrs. Mallard, who used to be a lovely but weak wife under her husband power. She did everything for her husband. She got his slippers when he got back home, made dinner, and worked as a slave for him. But all her devotion meant nothing to her husband who now wanted a divorce. So she fought back and like “At that point……of his head. (Page/paragraph ? 27) The“weak” wife took action and killed her husband. Mrs. Maloney killed her husband for purposes of fighting back against oppression and obtaining her freedom. In the process of killing her husband, she killed her image as a weak lamb as well. In conclusion, both stories showed that women were oppressed by marriage, but it was really important as to what kind of position you take. Taking initiatives or being passive would lead to a totally different ending.
