1.从逻辑上讲,left his parents 发生在went to college之前.主句这样表达更自然：
Jack left his parents and went to college last year.去年杰克离开父母上了大学.
2.逗号后面的是一个分词短语作状语,表示伴随情况,相当于一个并例的谓语：
A:and (he) determined not to return home until he achieve his goal.
