Mike:I don’t think much of the modern art you
hang here on the wall. Those paintings
don't mean anything.
Susan:I know you mean that the pictures don’t
look、like something in real life.Is that right?
Mike:Yes.I mean when you look at paintings,
you should be able to identify what you are
looking at.
Susan:It’s true that in recent years we have seen
more and more modern art hanging in the
galleries around the world.
Mike:You are absolutely right.
Susan:in my opinion.we had more“true to life’’
art by the early masters because there
were no cameras. They did the job of cam—
eras. Now we have cameras to provide de—
tailed photography of objects and people as
well.Artists don’t want to do what can be
easily done by photography,so they try to
be creative with symbols and designs.
Mike:If you think this art is good, can you tell me
how to appreciate it?
Susan:It usually involves four steps. The first step
is to identify the media used in the work of
art.Is it a drawing or a Painting?Has it
been done with oil, crayon or watercolor?
Mike:I suppose I can do that.
Susan:The second step is to take an inventory of
what you see.
Mike:I do like different shapes and colors. So i
think I can do that.
Susan:Step three involves thinking about the
meanings of those lines,colors,and
shapes.Perhaps it doesn’t represent any.
thing, but it might intend to give you a cer-
tain feeling.
Mike=Do you mean to withhold judgement?
Susan:Yes.But judgement is the last step. After
you have analyzed the work from a number
of perspectives, then you ca n ask you rself,
“Do I like this piece,or do I enjoy looking
at it?”
Mike:Thank you for your advice.I’II try to look at
all art in a different way

Mike:I don’t think much of the modern art you hang here on the wall. Those paintings don't mean anything.
Susan:I know you mean that the pictures don’t look、like something in real life.Is that right?

Mike:If you think this art is good, can you tell me how to appreciate it?
Susan:It usually involves four steps. The first step is to identify the media used in the work of art.Is it a drawing or a Painting?Has it been done with oil, crayon or watercolor?
Mike:I suppose I can do that.
Susan:The second step is to take an inventory of what you see.
Mike:I do like different shapes and colors. So i think I can do that.

Susan:Yes.But judgement is the last step. After you have analyzed the work from a number of perspectives, then you can ask yourself,
“Do I like this piece,or do I enjoy looking at it?”
Mike:Thank you for your advice.I’II try to look at all art in a different way
