The new LMS includes the Ex Libris ALEPH 500 software and MetaLib/SFX.ALEPH 500 is the core of the system,supporting Acquisitions,Cataloguing,Circulation,Inter-Library Loans,Serials and of course,access by users to the On-Line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC),via standard Web browsers.The MetaLib/SFX software provides a library portal through which a user can simultaneously search across a hybrid of electronic and other resources to find and access those relevant to their areas of interest.
The Ex Libris system is a market leader in the field of library automation,and boasts implementation in many of the world’s most prestigious higher education,national and research libraries (including Harvard,the British Library,the Universities of York,Newcastle and Nottingham,University College London,and many more).With local library holdings that are acknowledged to be among the largest and most prestigious in Scotland,the use of a state-of-the-art LMS is an essential foundation for supporting teaching,learning and research,and for extending user access to resources held elsewhere.In addition to streamlining the procedures required to manage our own resources,the introduction of the Ex Libris system will provide a significant increase in the functionality available to library users.
Whilst facilitating a long-standing objective to integrate within one system all major aspects of the Library’s business – including Serials and ILL – the ALEPH software also provides sophisticated functionality which will significantly enhance user access to information.This is especially evident through the MetaLib/SFX module,a library portal which manages seamless access to today’s information resources under one umbrella,whether print or electronic,local or freely available - for example,library catalogues,reference databases,e-journals,digital repositories,subject-based Web gateways,and much more.
