This essay,in three parts,explores the survival of modernist aesthetics,
specifically the glorification of originality,spontaneity,and rebelliousness.
The modernist ideal makes sense historically,as a response to the deperson-
alizing force of modernization.However,it is not the only possible response,
or the best in all circumstances.Its adverse effects include restrictions on the
the artistic and social role of craft,neglect of convention-based arts such as
ornament,public disaffection with contemporary art,and an educational sys-
tem that denies our children the benefits of systematic art instruction.In each
case,our present needs are best served by recognizing that convention is no
bar to creativity,and by a return to the older ideal of gradual innovation
within a shared language of form and content.
